Rayno Nel has made history by becoming the first African, and the first man outside Europe and North America to win the prestigious World’s Strongest Man title.
Nel’s victory over the weekend in Sacramento, USA, is a defining moment for both the country and the continent. The former Cheetahs rugby player shocked the global strongman community by claiming the title in his rookie season.
From the Central University of Technology rugby fields to the world stage, Nel’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. He now stands as a symbol of South African resilience and ambition.
“This is a win for South Africa. For Africa,” Nel said after his win, proudly draped in the national flag.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie praised the achievement, describing it as a landmark not just for South Africa, but for the entire continent.
“When Rayno approached me, he spoke with humility but had the fire of a champion,” McKenzie said. “Today, South Africa and Africa celebrate with him.”
Nel’s path to victory has been anything but easy. After transitioning from rugby, he entered strongman competitions with little fan base, but an unshakable belief in what was possible. South Africa’s hosting of the Strongman Champions League in 2024 planted the seed; Nel’s win has made that vision come sooner than expected.
“To see him raise the South African flag on such a massive platform, and to hear his words of pride for his country, is a moment I, and this nation, will not forget,” McKenzie said.
