Mamelodi Sundowns began their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over South Korean side Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday evening. The win sees the South African champions take an early lead in Group F, ahead of global heavyweights Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Iqraam Rayners found the back of the net following a slick assist from Lucas Ribeiro. The goal was enough to separate the sides in a match that remained tense and competitive throughout.
Ulsan responded with attacking intent in the second half, but Sundowns held their ground defensively. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a solid performance, while defenders Keanu Cupido and Divine Lunga made crucial interventions to protect their narrow lead.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, who had stressed the importance of tactical discipline and collecting early points during his pre-match briefing, was pleased with his side’s execution on the night.
“We prepared tactically and strategically very well. We made a very wonderful first half,” Cardoso told the media after the final whistle. He also acknowledged that the team missed a few chances to widen the gap, but commended the players for their discipline.
With Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund playing to a goalless draw in the other Group F clash, Sundowns now sit alone at the top of the group with three points. Their next two matches will be pivotal, as they aim to become the first South African side to advance beyond the group stages of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Brazilians will now shift their focus to their upcoming encounter with Borussia Dortmund, followed by a showdown with Fluminense. Both matches are expected to test the tactical depth and endurance of the Pretoria-based outfit as they continue their quest for international glory.
