The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has stepped up its humanitarian response in flood-affected areas of Butterworth, under the Mnquma Local Municipality, by providing comprehensive Social Relief of Distress (SRD) support to displaced families.
The intervention was led on-site by SASSA Eastern Cape Regional Executive Manager Mr Bandile Maqetuka, who was joined by Eastern Cape Premier Mr Oscar Mabuyane and MEC for Social Development Ms Bukiwe Fanta. The delegation met with community members and reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting those impacted by the floods.
SASSA has set up temporary relief sites in the area and is currently providing:
- Three nutritious hot meals a day
- School uniforms for learners who lost their belongings
- Vanity packs containing essential personal care items
- Baby packs to support infant care
- Cash vouchers to assist bereaved families with immediate expenses
- Basic needs packages with essential goods
- Blankets for warmth and shelter
- Mattresses, one per individual, to restore dignity and comfort
Premier Mabuyane said the provincial government is working closely with SASSA and the Department of Social Development to ensure that no affected household is left behind.
“This intervention shows that government is not just talking but delivering where it matters most — to the people in distress,” he said.
MEC Bukiwe Fanta echoed this, emphasizing the importance of swift, compassionate responses in disaster situations.
The outreach forms part of SASSA’s ongoing disaster management efforts across the Eastern Cape, aimed at restoring stability and dignity to families in crisis. Residents in need are encouraged to report to local relief points or contact the nearest SASSA office.
