The De Aar Regional Court in the Northern Cape sentenced a 26-year-old man to ten years in prison for raping a 16-year-old teenage girl in 2022.
According to the police, the teenage girl was with a friend in the Nonzwakazi area of De Aar when the 26-year-old convicted man and two other unknown men appeared. They chased away the victim’s friend, raped the 16 year-old girl, and then fled the scene.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 4, 2022.
“The case was registered and assigned to Captain Valery Booysen of De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.cEvidence led to the arrest of the accused, who was convicted and sentenced to ten (10) years imprisonment in the De Aar Regional Court,” reads SAPS statement.
“The court also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm and the accused name to be entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.”
In an unrelated event, the Bloemfontein magistrate court convicted a former police constable for conspiracy to commit armed robbery and contravention of Section 120 of the firearms control Act 60 of 2000.
According to the SAPS report, in 2019, Noxolo Perseverance Job (39), who was tied to Protection and Security Services (PSS) in Bloemfontein, “recruited people to stage a robbery and steal firearms from a safe at the PSS offices. She further lent her official firearm to the would-be robbers at an amount of R50 000.”
“A whistle-blower who had become privy to Job’s plans informed the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Bloemfontein. The Hawks followed up on the information. On 08 October 2019, Job was arrested during a mock transaction. She appeared in court on several occasions culminating in her conviction.”
The case against Job has been postponed until December 9, 2024, for sentencing.
