Toleni Senior Secondary School (SSS) is one of the first schools within Umzimvubu Local Municipality to have access to unlimited internet connection.
Toleni SSS is based in KwaShushu village around Dangwana under KwaBhaca. It is also a new school that opened few years ago.
Honourable Mayor Cllr. Zukiswa Ndevu accompanied by her Executive Members went to hand over the wi-fi infrastructure that costed R1,5 million.
She encouraged all learners to effectively use the Wi-Fi for educational purposes and not to browse through pornography, dating apps and video games.
By reminding the learners on how useful the internet is the mayor also reminded grade 12 learners that exams will begin on the 30th of October 2023
The principal of the school, Mr Dumisani Mtwesi showed how grateful he is with the government plan and promises a significant increase of the grade 12 pass rate.
He said “The matric class average is gradually improving. Our matric class first achieved an average of 70% in the beginning of this year, thus improving by 8% during the second term resulting to 78%. It’s pleasing to note that they have since attained 82% in hope of receiving 97% or more in the final term”.
We had a challenge in 2020 when our pass rate was only at 70%, but we certainly hope for much improved results. – concluded Mr Mtwesi
The District Director from the Department of Education, Mr Monwabisi Mbangeni said he is honoured to see such commitment from a new school. Since the establishment of the school, we have witnessed a significant growth in numbers.
He said top achieving schools will also receive uniforms and laptops in the upcoming years to encourage students with the technology upgrade that will help them have more knowledge about the internet and job application.
The 4IR global development has assumed space in most commercial and public sector markets, that is why all learners should be exposed to the usage of technology and explore online opportunities.
A learner at the school, Zukiswa Majima, 17 said, “It is an honour for us to receive much improved Wi-Fi infrastructure development in the school because it was hard to get previous examination papers but now it will be much easier to gain access to it through this development” concluded an excited Majima.
The free to access WI-FI connection covers a 100-metre radius throughout the Toleni Village and will be regularly monitored by the Municipality.
