On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality launched the official Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Month, honoring the legacy of the late anti-apartheid icon, Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The event was hosted in partnership with Alfred Nzo District Municipality and Equla Projects, with the highlight being the announcement of the Annual Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Golf Day.
Set to take place on September 26th at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club, the Golf Day will commemorate Mama Winnie’s lifelong commitment to black excellence, women’s empowerment, and the freedom struggle. “We are proud to celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved Mama Winnie,” said Cllr. Daniswa Mafumbatha, Mayor of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, during a press conference at the Executive Boardroom in Civic Centre.
The golf event aims to inspire the youth, with a focus on boys and girls under the age of 16, encouraging them to uphold Mama Winnie’s legacy. Mayor Mafumbatha expressed her hope that the celebration would “ignite the same passion in our community, especially among our youth.”
With its championship course along the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast, the Wild Coast Sun Country Club serves as the ideal venue for the prestigious event, paying tribute to a woman whose dedication continues to inspire new generations.
