Qukanca Village, located in Mpondomise Phase 3, KwaBhaca under Ward 23, is finally set to receive electricity after decades of waiting. The Umzimvubu Local Municipality is nearing completion of a R4.8 million electrification project in Emampondomiseni, which will bring electricity to 245 households according to the municipality.
The project, which was scheduled to take 9 months, has been eagerly anticipated by residents who have lived without electricity for nearly 20 years. The Honourable Mayor, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu, project manager Mr. Bingwa, Ward Councillor Jona, ward committee members, community leaders, and the local chief recently visited the site to observe the project’s progress.
The municipality has employed 21 residents for the project, all of whom were born and raised in the area. These employees are grateful for the opportunity to support their families while contributing to the community’s development. One worker, Phathuxolo Phatho, shared his gratitude, saying that this project has not only improved his living conditions but also equipped him with skills he can use in his handyman business moving forward.
Residents believe that the new electricity will enhance their quality of life and bring greater safety to the area.
We will feel safer now, and we hope the lights will help reduce crime caused by amaphara, – said Mr. Jonga, a long-time resident of Qukanca Village.
Mr. Mziwamawushe Mbedu, Chairperson of the PSC, also praised the project. He thanked the municipality, the contractor, and the community for their dedication to ensuring the project runs smoothly. However, he raised concerns about recent new houses in the area not being included in the electrification map, emphasizing the need for all homes to be equipped with electrical connections.
Electricity is expected to bring multiple benefits to the village. Mayor Ndevu highlighted how students will now be able to study in well-lit environments and access the internet via cell phones and computers. Additionally, residents will save time previously spent gathering firewood and can store food safely with refrigeration. “All communities deserve development, and we are committed to improving the lives of our residents,” said Mayor Ndevu. The contractor expects to complete the project by early December, ahead of the initial nine-month schedule, ensuring that every home in Qukanca Village will have access to electricity soon.
