UMZIMVUBU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY RESIDENTS LEFT HOMELESS

The ongoing fight between Umzimvubu local municipality and the residents took a very sharp curve earlier this week when the municipality took a harsh decision of destroying all the houses that were ‘illegally’ built on Municipal land at Maxesibeni.

Hundreds of residents were left homeless and lost their important belongings on Tuesday the 4th of April 2023.

“There were several engagement meetings with the residents to try to get them out of that municipal land but have been refusing hence this decision was taken. The residents knew this was bound to happen because they were served a notice,” – said Linda Mveku the ward 28 councilor.

Adding that  the land that was illegally occupied by the residents will be used  for Umzimvubu local municipality development.

The Municipality is planning to build an FET college and middle income houses in that area.

“I had a 5 room house that was destroyed. I don’t know where my children will sleep tonight and what they will eat because I have lost everything that was inside. My heart is torn”, one of the residents commented.

The residents said they are taking this matter back to court because they were given permission by the Mthatha High court to build in the area.
