Orlando Pirates have secured the signature of Stellenbosch FC midfielder Andre de Jong, with the clubs reaching an agreement ahead of the January transfer window. The 29-year-old New Zealander is expected to be unveiled once final paperwork is completed.
What Happened?
Stellenbosch accepted the Pirates’ offer after the Soweto giants failed to close the deal in September. De Jong has delivered eight goals and 11 assists in 113 PSL appearances, establishing himself as one of the league’s most hard-working and intelligent attacking midfielders.
He has scored three goals and added one assist in 22 matches this season. Stellenbosch currently sit near the foot of the Betway Premiership table, winning only three of their first 14 fixtures.
Last season, he managed eight goals and five assists across 47 games. Beyond statistics, coaches often describe him as a selfless playmaker who links midfield and attack with sharp movement and disciplined pressing.
Official Response
Pirates have not commented publicly, but internal sources say the technical team views him as a direct, team-first number 10 who fits their attacking patterns.
De Jong has played 15 matches against Pirates in his career — more than against any other club — scoring once. At Orlando Stadium, he will compete for the central attacking role with Sipho Mbule, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Kabelo Dlamini, while Relebohile Mofokeng occasionally operates in the same space.
Community Impact
For Stellenbosch, the move makes another departure during a difficult season. Supporters have expressed concern about squad depth as the club tries to steer clear of the relegation zone.
In Soweto, fans are optimistic that De Jong’s work rate and spatial awareness will strengthen the attack. His 260-game career includes spells in New Zealand and Australia, producing 69 goals and 37 assists.
