Hong Kong – South African tea took center stage at the 2024 Hong Kong International Tea Fair, as three of the nation’s premier tea producers—Rooibos Pty, Magwa Estate Tea, and Rooibos Laager—showcased their products from August 15 to 17. The South African Consulate Booth, where these teas were displayed, attracted significant attention, becoming one of the fair’s busiest and most popular destinations.
The South African Consulate in Hong Kong orchestrated a series of presentations to introduce these unique tea brands to an international audience. These presentations delved into the rich tea culture of South Africa, the origins of the showcased teas, and their significance to the country’s heritage. Visitors to the booth were treated to tea tastings, where they could savor the distinctive flavors of South African teas, and engage in lively discussions about the nation’s tea industry and broader cultural offerings.
Stella Sigcau, Consul for Political and Economic Affairs at the South African Consulate in Hong Kong, led the presentations, providing insights into South Africa’s tea heritage, the global presence of its tea brands, and the economic impact of the tea sector. Representatives from the South African tea companies also shared in-depth knowledge about the various teas, highlighting their health benefits and unique qualities.
The fair not only served as a platform to promote South African tea but also to boost tourism, particularly cultural tourism, by highlighting the close connection between the country’s teas and its diverse regions. For instance, discussions around Rooibos tea naturally evoked images of the Cederberg Mountains in the Western Cape, where the tea originates. This region is famed for its stunning sandstone formations, ancient San rock paintings, and vibrant spring flowers, all of which contribute to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Similarly, Magwa Estate Tea brought to mind the breathtaking Magwa Falls and the lush landscapes of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape’s Mpondoland. This area is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, the friendly amaMpondo people, and its globally recognized botanical diversity. The tea culture in this region is deeply embedded in the local lifestyle and plays a significant role in the economy of the Eastern Cape province.
The global tea industry has seen substantial growth, with tea becoming the second most consumed beverage worldwide, surpassing even coffee in some regions. Rooibos tea, in particular, has gained a strong foothold in international markets, with exports reaching over 30 countries. This growth is largely driven by increasing consumer interest in health, positioning South African teas as both a cultural treasure and a thriving economic sector.
Magwa Estate has a history of international recognition, having won the International Award for Commercial Prestige in 1991 and the International Quality Award in 1993, both in Spain. The estate’s commitment to environmental stewardship is underscored by its organic certification. The 2024 Hong Kong Tea Fair marked Magwa’s debut on such a global stage, and the brand’s flavorful tea garnered significant interest, showcasing the potential of rural South Africa’s agricultural products on the world stage.
As the event concluded, expectations were high for an even larger South African presence at the 2025 Hong Kong International Tea Fair, signaling continued growth and international recognition for the country’s tea industry.
