The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant helps millions of unemployed South Africans each month. If your application has been declined, you can ask for the decision to be reviewed through the official SRD appeal process.
Who can appeal?
You can submit an appeal if:
- Your SRD application was declined.
- You believe the decision was incorrect.
- Your financial circumstances meet the SRD eligibility requirements.
An appeal must be submitted for each month that your application was declined.
How to submit a SASSA SRD appeal
Step 1: Visit the Appeals Portal
Go to:
https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
Step 2: Enter your details
Provide:
- South African ID number
- Cellphone number used during application
Step 3: Verify your identity
SASSA will send a PIN to your cellphone.
Enter the PIN to continue.
Step 4: Select the declined month
Choose the month for which you want to appeal.
If several months were declined, submit an appeal for each month separately.
Step 5: Submit your appeal
Review the information and submit.
Keep your reference number for future enquiries.
How long does a SASSA appeal take?
Appeals are reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
Processing times vary depending on application volumes and verification checks.

Common reasons SRD applications are declined
Applications are often declined because:
- Alternative income was detected.
- UIF records show active benefits.
- NSFAS funding was identified.
- Identity verification failed.
