PSL ROUND UP : THIS WEEKEND SEE’S A PLETHORA OF GOALS AS TWO SOWETO GIANTS SUFFER HUMILIATING DEFEATS

Date:

A total of six matches were played this past weekend in the Premiere Soccer League amassing a tally of nineteen goals. Mamelodi Sundowns continued their dominance in the PSL era as they shot back to pole position after defeating TS Galaxy in Tswane. Supersport United had a day to remember as they claimed the scalp of a once great Soweto Giant in Dobsonville while Orlando Pirates was the only Sowetan giant to stand its ground after an emphatic win against Chippa United in Gqeberha while their fierce rivals suffered a humiliating defeat that warranted an apology from their Head Coach, Stuart Baxter after being crushed by newcomers, Royal AM.

Stellenbosch FC were in a rampant mood in the Western Cape Derby as they easily brushed aside Eric Tinkler’s men to claim the bragging rights in the West while a solitary strike was enough to hand Baroka FC a much-needed win over newbies, Sekhukhune United. Here is a summary of this weekends PSL games;

18 September 2021

Chippa United 1 : 3 Orlando Pirates FC

Coach Gavin Hunt’s men fell at feet of the Sea Robers after squandering a first half lead courtesy of their trouble ridden superstar, Philani Mahlambi who did well to beat the offside trap to put one past Jackson Mabokgwane in the 9th minute. Tsogofetso Mabasa did well to hit a volley from point blank in the 30th minute to put Amabacaneer back into the game. The second half saw the Sea Robbers ring in changes in pursuit of three points and they were rewarded for their efforts when Abel Mabaso put them ahead for the first time in the game in the 58th minute before Goodman Mosele put matters beyond reach for the Gqeberha side with only 12 minutes left to play.

Cape Town City 0 – 3 Stellenbosch FC

Eric Tinkler’s men were humiliated on home soil by a rampant Stellies in an emphatic drabbing this weekend. Coach Backer’s men were not in a good mood and were smelling blood in the Western Cape derby. Goals from Robertson in the 29th minute and a brace from super sub, Judas Moseamedi sealed matters for Stellies.

Baroka FC 1 : 0 Sekhukhune United

Bakgakga were at home in this encounter as they welcomed newbies, Sekhukhune United in their first encounter in the PSL. A solitary strike from Bafana Bafana star, Evidence Makgopa was enough to seal three points for Baroka in the only match that didn’t produced much goals this weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs 1 : 4 Royal AM

There was no love and peace in Naturena this weekend but only pain and humiliation as they suffered a rather unprecedented loss on home soil to new comers, Royal AM in a five goal thriller this past Saturday at FNB stadium. Thwihli Thwahla opened their account ten minutes before half time through a neat finish from Bafana Bafana striker Victor Letsoalo. The Royal AM talisman continued his good run of form when he completed his brace from a free kick that left the Amakhosi shot stopper flat-footed. It looked like there was light at the end of the tunnel for The Phefeni Glamour Boys in the battle of the Glitz and the Glam as former Bidvest Wits fullback Sifiso Hlanti scored from a free kick that took a slight deflection bringing Amakhosi back in the game for a few minutes. However it was not Kaizer Chiefs night as Royal AM scored two goals making it 4 : 1 to grab all three points from the encounter.

Super Sport United 3 : 0 Swallows FC

Matsantsantsa aPitoli were in a rampant mood when they visited a once respected Soweto giant in Dobsonville on Sunday handing them a 3 nil drubbing leaving the Dube Birds with their tails between their legs. Webber opened Supersport United’s account with a neatly taken spot kick after Sipho Sibiya was judged to have handled the ball inside the box following a cross from Mokoena. Teboho Mokoena was back in the mix of things as he latched on a ball that was squandered by Virgil Vries after a poorly cleared cross. Thamsanqa Gabuza put matters beyond doubt for Matsantsantsa aPitoli as he calmly slotted in the back of the a penalty after Webber was fouled in the box.

Mamelodi Sundowns 3 : 0 TS Galaxy

The Tswane sides were in an unforgiving mood this past Sunday amassing a tally of six goals in their emphatic wins. The Brazilians shot back to the top of the log after defeating TS Galaxy by three goals to nil at Loftus. Goals from Musa Lesbusa in the 57th minute, Peter Shalulile in the 59th minute and Thabiso Kutumela’s first goal as a Brazilian in the 84th minute saw Sundowns easily cruise past TS Galaxy after a rather dormant first half in Tswane.
