Prof Dorcas Nompumelelo Jafta the first female lecturer of Isixhosa has died

Prof Dorcas Nompumelelo Jafta, a renowned academic, the first black female isiXhosa lecturer at the University of Fort Hare which generated much debate as a young black female in a male-dominated work sphere.

Prof DN Jafta worked alongside prolific isiXhosa giants such as Late Professor Mhlobo Wabantwana Jadezweni, Professor Peter Mtuze and late Professor Sizwe Churchill Satyo to develop the isiXhosa language.

She passed away at the Waterfall hospital after a short illness at the age of 87years.

She will be remembered for her significant contribution in the field of isixhosa, her academic achievements, as a community builder, an inspirational leader.

Her love for her family was outstanding as she wrote a book tracing the lineage of the Jafta Family Amaxaba. Her love for her maternal side of the family amaBhele, her mother uMakhuboni Gelese, Jafta has been amazing.

She will be laid to rest on the 18 January 2023 at St Johns Collegiate church, Callaway Street Mthatha.
