VICTIMS OF NDWEDWE MASS SHOOTING LAID TO REST

MTHATHA, – A swift police response led to a deadly confrontation on the N2 near the Mhlakulo Administrative area outside Tsolo, where two robbery suspects were fatally shot following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

Police officers from the Tactical Response Team (TRT) received information about a Polo Vivo linked to multiple cash-in-transit robberies in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Acting on this intelligence, officers tracked the vehicle as it headed toward Mthatha. When the police located the vehicle on the N2 and attempted to pull it over for a search, the suspects reportedly opened fire, forcing officers to return fire. The shootout resulted in the deaths of both suspects on the scene.

During the investigation, police recovered two unlicensed firearms—a pistol and a revolver—used by the suspects in the confrontation.

Cases of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of ammunition have been opened. Additionally, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will conduct an inquest into the incident.

The Eastern Cape Police remain vigilant in their commitment to curbing violent crimes and ensuring the safety of communities.
