The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has distanced itself from a misleading message spreading on social media, which falsely claims that the 2025 student registration portal has been closed due to budget constraints according to NASFAS.
The viral statement—reportedly originating from the Durban University of Technology (DUT)—falsely alleges that no registration templates will be accepted “until further notice.” NSFAS has described the message as “entirely misleading” and said it constitutes a “gross misrepresentation” of the scheme’s operations.
In an official press release, NSFAS called on DUT to immediately retract the claim if it originated from within the university. “Such inaccurate statements not only mislead students and stakeholders but also potentially undermine the reputation of NSFAS,” the statement said.
According to the scheme, its online registration portal opened on 3 March 2025, with the final deadline for submission set for 31 March. Universities were encouraged to submit registration data by 14 March to ensure timely fund processing.
NSFAS confirmed that delays in tuition and allowance disbursements were a result of some institutions, including DUT, missing the recommended submission deadline. However, the scheme has now resolved the issue.
As of 6 May 2025, NSFAS successfully released student allowance payments to the affected universities. Tuition fee disbursements will follow in due course, – the statement added.
NSFAS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting eligible students and urged institutions to adhere to submission guidelines to prevent future delays.
NSFAS is a South African government agency offering financial aid to students from poor and working-class backgrounds at public universities and TVET colleges.
