NSFAS Announces Opening of 2024 Funding Applications and Introduces Mobile App for Improved Access

Date:

In a recent statement, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) disclosed that applications for financial aid for learners entering the post-school system and those seeking assistance for the 2024 academic year will officially commence on November 21, 2023, and conclude on January 31, 2024.

The decision to open applications in November aims to streamline the decision-making process, aligning it with the financial eligibility assessment dependent on updated South African Revenue Service (SARS) information. NSFAS is awaiting SARS completion of its tax period to ensure the necessary and updated information is available during the application season.

NSFAS emphasized the importance of applying on time for students interested in post-school education and training. It clarified that results are not required for first-time entrants in post-school education and training. The organization is working with the Department of Basic Education to enhance application validation processes, including verifying parental relationships.

To expedite the process and avoid appeal procedures, NSFAS urged students to provide accurate information, particularly regarding parental details, as validations with Home Affairs occur. Addressing challenges with parental relationship verification, NSFAS highlighted its partnership with the Department of Basic Education, strengthening its ability to verify such relationships.

For the 2024 application period, NSFAS introduced new features, including a mobile application available initially for iPhone operating system (iOS) and Android, with future availability on HUAWEI devices. The mobile app will include biometric capability, scheduled for rollout later in the year.

Applicants, especially new South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries, will benefit from immediate funding decisions upon verification, requiring no supporting documents except for learners with disabilities. Rejected applicants can appeal, emphasizing the importance of submitting appropriate supporting documents.

Enhancing accessibility, students can track their application statuses and funding through WhatsApp at 078 519 8006 and USSD at *120*67327#.

Meanwhile, NSFAS announced that its Board, in consultation with the Department of Higher Education and Training, is finalizing funding guidelines for the academic year 2024. These guidelines, along with the opening of the application season for the academic year 2024, will be revealed on November 21, 2023.
