The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has strongly condemned the recent arrests of its Members of Parliament, Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, labelling them as part of an ongoing “political witch-hunt against black intellectuals.”
The two MPs, both former executives at Transnet, were arrested in connection with their previous leadership roles but have since been released on bail. The party insists that the arrests are not about justice, but rather a coordinated effort to intimidate and criminalise black professionals and revolutionaries associated with the MK Party.
In a strongly worded media statement, the party criticised the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for what it described as politically motivated and selective prosecutions. “We reject the notion that these arrests are rooted in a genuine pursuit of justice,” the statement read. “Instead, they are part of a broader, deeply troubling campaign.”
The party drew parallels between the arrests of Molefe and Gama and what it termed the “continued vilification” of former President Jacob Zuma, claiming he too is a victim of a biased justice system. The MK Party argued that Zuma is being dragged through endless legal processes while individuals connected to political elites are spared similar scrutiny.
The statement also raised concerns about the treatment of other prominent figures such as Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Advocate Dali Mpofu, describing them as victims of institutional hostility for standing up against perceived injustice. “These are not isolated incidents,” the party stated. “They are part of a systemic purge.”
The MK Party further alleged that the NPA is operating under political influence rather than upholding impartial justice. “This is not justice; it is a witch-hunt,” the statement concluded.
The party called on civil society, progressive movements, and the broader public to reject what it calls a culture of selective justice. It reaffirmed its commitment to defending those who challenge the status quo and warned it “will not be silenced.”
For further comment, the party directed enquiries to spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela and head of media and communications Sipho Tyira.
