MK Party Accuses AfriForum of 'Treasonous Betrayal'

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has condemned AfriForum for what it calls a “treasonous betrayal” of South Africa, accusing the organization of lobbying foreign powers to impose economic pressure on the country.

“AfriForum’s actions amount to economic sabotage and a direct assault on our nation’s independence,” the party stated. “Their appeal to a foreign government, which has led to economic retaliation against South Africa, aligns with legal precedents defining treason.”

The MK Party claims that AfriForum’s engagement with the Trump administration in the United States meets the legal threshold for treason under South African law. “The courts have ruled that collaborating with foreign actors to weaken the state constitutes treason, even if such plans are never fully realized,” the statement continued.

AfriForum, a civil rights group known for its opposition to aspects of the government’s policies, has long been criticized by its detractors for allegedly defending the interests of South Africa’s white minority. The MK Party argues that its latest actions demonstrate a “deliberate attempt to reverse the gains of our liberation by weaponizing foreign influence.”

“The same apartheid laws that their forebears used against our freedom fighters must now be used against them,” the party asserted.

The MK Party has taken formal steps by laying treason charges against AfriForum and is calling on the government to take strong legal and diplomatic action. “If this betrayal is left unchecked, it will embolden other reactionary forces to undermine our national sovereignty,” the party warned.

The party also urged South Africans to “unite against foreign interference” and resist efforts that threaten the country’s stability. “AfriForum has declared itself an enemy of the people. Their anti-democratic agenda can no longer be tolerated,” the statement concluded.
