The new Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie now known as Lord Gayton, announced today via Twitter that the government will no longer fund trips for super fans. In his tweet, McKenzie emphasized the need to prioritize financial support for athletes and artists who are struggling to raise money for attending sporting events and exhibitions.
I have stopped all trips for super fans. We have athletes & artists who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions. How do we justify paying for fans? We shall no longer be paying for these trips and will use that money where it’s needed the most, – McKenzie tweeted.
The announcement sparked reactions on social media. A follower, @judzlicious, responded, “Arts & Culture needs to be supported/promoted and properly funded for young ones starting from Primary school. We need to get filmmakers from high schools; there’s too much gatekeeping in this industry.”
Another user, @Amza_5, expressed support for McKenzie’s decision, tweeting, “Love your work Gayton. No more free trips for Mama Joy. She will def miss Zizi Kodwa. At least she got herself a man in France from those free trips.”
McKenzie’s move is seen as a significant shift in policy, aiming to redirect funds to more critical areas within the sports, arts, and culture sectors.
