On Saturday, 09 July 2022, a mass shooting took place at the Emazulwini Tavern in Nomzamo Park, in Soweto. According to community members and victims, the shooting took place around eleven in the evening.

Fourteen victims died on the scene, three are in a critical condition at the Chris Hani, Baragwanath Hospital and one was confirmed dead at another hospital. The victims that survived this incident are getting medical assistance whilst the police department investigates the cause of this shooting.

Nearby residence of Nomzamo Park describes the Mdlalose Tavern also known as the Emazulwini Tavern as a place of enjoyment, a place where they can go watch soccer, drink and meet up.

Gauteng Province police commissioner, Lt. General Elias Mawela, clarifies that the tavern is licensed and was operating within operational times when the shooting took place.

“It was around eleven in the evening when I heard gunshots blazing from outside. Close to midnight my nephew knocks on my door and tries to explain to me what happened. He then carries on to state that my youngest nephew was also at the tavern, that is when I immediately rushed to the scene where I found my nephew lifeless. There was a lot of people piled up on each other at the scene including my brother in-law that also lost his life in the shooting” says resident.

Family member of three of the victims that were at the tavern last night say they are also heartbroken and are still trying to process what happened to their loved ones. They state that they were not told the details of what really took place but were told that a random group of people who were allegedly driving a Quantum came into the tavern and started shooting at everyone.

Details to the motive of this massacre is currently unknown. L.t General Elias Mawela says investigations to the details of this incident are underway. Witnesses are also being investigated. Provincial Commissioner urges those that have any information that would be helpful to come forth.

Community members say Nomzamo Park used to be the safest area but now has turned into a blood pool and danger zone. Gun shots are heard almost every day around the area. They say they are no longer safe because of instances such as these taking place in their community.
