The trial of six men accused of killing 18 people in Lusikisiki starts on 28 July 2025 in the High Court sitting at the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court. The proceedings are expected to run until 19 September 2025.
The accused: Mzukisi Ndamase (46), Siphosoxolo Myekethe (45), Aphiwe “AP” Ndende (25), Bonga Hintsa (31), Mawethu Nomdlembu (36), and Songezo Vuma (20) – face a string of serious charges. These include conspiracy to commit murder, 18 counts of murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. All six have abandoned their bail applications and remain in custody.
The charges stem from a mass shooting that took place on 28 September 2024 at two neighbouring homes in Ngobozana Village near Lusikisiki. Eighteen people were gunned down in what authorities described as a planned and brutal attack.
In addition to the Lusikisiki massacre, the accused have also been linked to the murder of local politician Mncedi Gijana in KwaBhaca on 19 August 2024. His killing sparked outrage and fears of escalating political violence in the region.
The upcoming trial is expected to draw widespread attention due to the scale of the killings and the alleged organised nature of the crimes. With eight weeks allocated for the court proceedings, the State is expected to present extensive evidence, including witness testimonies and forensic reports.
Security is likely to be tight around the courthouse throughout the trial period. Families of the victims, community members, and political leaders are expected to attend the hearings.
