A 27-year-old woman from Nonyevu in Port St Johns faces a murder charge after her 11-month-old baby girl was discovered dead in the bushes by a local man.

The man found the baby in a refuse bag while urinating on January 5, 2024, prompting the community’s swift action in tracing the mother. Police revealed the baby fell ill on December 29, 2023, passing away on January 1, 2024.

Allegedly, the mother wrapped the infant in a towel, placed her in a plastic bag, and discarded her in the bushes. The enraged community assaulted the mother, resulting in her hospitalization. Charged with murder, she will appear in court, and a post-mortem will determine the exact cause of the baby’s death.
