The Department of Correctional Services says it has moved an inmate at St Albans’ Prison in Gqeberha to a Special Care Unit after he was caught with a cellphone, which by the Department’s spokesperson Singabikho Nxumalo, is defined as a contraband in correctional centres and said using them is a punishable offence.

Nxumalo said in a statement on Tuesday that the phone was confiscated from the inmate who used it to “flamboyantly post his image on social media”.

“The identified inmate is incarcerated at St Albans Correctional Facility in the Eastern Cape Region and he has been moved to a Special Care Unit for the purpose of an investigation and will be formally changed”, he said.

Nxumalo said the inmate will also face other charges.

“The Department of Correctional Services was deeply incensed by this behavior and promised strong action and consequences”, he said.
