The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has confirmed that seven people have died following torrential rains and flooding that battered parts of the province, with OR Tambo District Municipality hardest hit.
According to official reports, six bodies were discovered in Decoligny village near Mthatha, while the seventh victim was recovered at Tsolo’s Bedlana River. The fatalities come as many communities grapple with severe cold, road damage, and forced displacements caused by the relentless weather.
“This is a devastating reminder of nature’s force,” said Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, who is set to visit the affected district on 11 June 2025.
The Premier has deployed Members of the Executive Council to support local rescue efforts, ensuring affected households receive emergency assistance and resources. The Joint Operations Centre (JOC) has been activated to lead the province’s coordinated flood response.
In addition to the loss of life, the storm has caused significant damage to infrastructure, particularly roads, and forced many residents to evacuate their homes.
“We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in flood-prone areas,” Mabuyane added, assuring the public that disaster response teams remain on high alert.
Municipal and provincial officials are working together to stabilize the situation, restore basic services, and roll out relief interventions.
