The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has announced scheduled blasting operations on the N2 national road between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff, warning motorists of temporary road closures next week.

According to SANRAL, blasting will occur on:

  • Tuesday, 27 May 2025 – approximately 10.6 kilometres from Mount Frere in the direction of Mount Ayliff.
  • Thursday, 29 May 2025 – approximately 4.3 kilometres from Mount Frere heading toward Mount Ayliff.

Each operation will result in a full road closure for a maximum of 30 minutes, and motorists are urged to plan their trips in advance to avoid unnecessary delays.

Alternative routes have been suggested for motorists travelling between Kokstad and Mthatha. These include:

  • Matatiele to Mount Fletcher via the N2
  • Flagstaff and Lusikisiki to Port St Johns via the R61, rejoining the N2 in Mthatha

However, road users should note that the shortest detour is 69 kilometres longer and could add up to 50 minutes to travel time.

“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes, and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Kayakazi Mafuta, SANRAL’s Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Head.

SANRAL has apologized for any inconvenience and encourages the public to monitor further updates.
