Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has called for a new era of sustainable and inclusive mining, demonstrating major progress in the province’s mineral sector during his address at the 3rd Annual Eastern Cape Province Mining CSI Indaba. Held under the theme “Mining the Future Together,” the gathering brought together mining leaders, innovators, and government officials to chart a future where mining drives local development, not just extraction.
What Happened?
Premier Mabuyane shared a vision of a province where mining becomes a catalyst for growth, jobs, and opportunity across districts such as Amathole, Chris Hani, and Sarah Baartman.
He spotlighted the revival of the Elitheni Coal Mine in Emalahleni (Chris Hani District) as a major milestone in local economic renewal. Once dormant, the mine has now resumed operations and delivered significant results:
- 84 new jobs created
- Over 15,000 tonnes of coal mined and stockpiled
- Three successful blasting operations with positive laboratory outcomes
Official Response
The Premier also emphasized the importance of responsible mining and beneficiation, ensuring that the province’s mineral wealth benefits local communities. He said the Eastern Cape’s approach prioritizes skills development, youth empowerment, and community ownership in mining projects.
Mabuyane added that the expansion of kaolin, limestone, and manganese exploration across the province is already generating hope and boosting economic activity. These initiatives are expected to open new business opportunities, especially for small businesses.
Community Impact
The revival of the Elitheni Coal Mine has been welcomed by residents, many of whom had faced unemployment since the mine’s closure. The project’s renewal has not only created direct jobs but has also stimulated local transport, catering, and small-scale supply businesses.
Mining experts attending the Indaba noted that the Eastern Cape’s balanced focus on environment, community development, and industrialization could position the province as a national model for sustainable mining.
