Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi has welcomed the Roadmap launch of the Digital Transformation of the South African Government. This initiative represents a key shift in how citizens engage with essential services.

Officially unveiled as part of Phase II of Operation Vulindlela, which President Cyril Ramaphosa launched on May 7, 2025, the Roadmap reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and efficient service delivery. Its primary goal is to make government services more accessible to all South Africans.

A foundation of the 7th Administration, the Roadmap emphasizes the principles of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to deliver combined services safely and seamlessly. Central to this vision is the concept of a “One Person, One Government, One Touch” system, which is a single, trusted platform that connects citizens to various services.

The Inter-Departmental Working Group, co-chaired by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and National Treasury, will work alongside government departments to execute the initiatives outlined in the roadmap. Key components include the rollout of a Digital Identity System for remote verification, a Data Exchange Framework to simplify government processes, a secure Digital Payments System, and a zero-rated Digital Services Platform allowing citizens to access services without data costs.

For everyday South Africans, this means that renewing a driver’s license, applying for social grants, or retrieving health records will become significantly easier and more cost-effective. Minister Malatsi stated, “This Roadmap is not just about modernizing systems; it’s about giving people back their time and streamlining access to important services as efficiently as the best private sector platforms.”
