What is happening?
Alfred Nzo Executive Mayor, Cllr Nomasomi Mshuqwana, has tasked the Alfred Nzo Development Agency (ANDA) with leading a bold new approach to transform the district’s economy. In a strategic meeting with the agency’s board and management, the Mayor emphasised the need for “visible industrial impact” beyond compliance or paperwork.
As the district’s main economic driver, ANDA has now been directed to prioritise local job creation, attract investment, and unlock the value of key assets across the region.
Why it matters to you
This shift aims to create more local jobs, support small farmers, and grow new industries such as cannabis and renewable energy. Instead of slow-moving plans, residents can expect practical initiatives like shearing sheds, crop plantations, and a district-level fresh produce market.
These projects are designed to reduce poverty, increase food security, and build local self-reliance.
What you need to know
Here are the key projects and partnerships driving this transformation:
- Wool industry support: District-wide handover of shearing sheds to assist small-scale wool farmers.
- Cannabis Master Plan: Formal rollout of the district’s cannabis development framework.
- Renewable energy pilots: Projects underway in Umzimvubu to support energy access and green growth.
- Shared services with CDC: A partnership with the Coega Development Corporation to improve planning and delivery.
- New crop zones: Coffee and amadumbe plantations being established with the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC).
- Fresh Produce Market: A central market hub in planning stages to serve local farmers and buyers.
All projects are being aligned with the District Development Model (DDM) to ensure sustainability and inclusive benefit.
What you should do next
If you’re a local entrepreneur, cooperative, or farmer in the Alfred Nzo District:
- Monitor updates from ANDA and the Municipality on opportunities to participate.
- Engage local councillors or ward committees to stay informed about project rollouts.
- Register cooperatives or small businesses if you plan to supply, grow or sell within these sectors.
- Prepare compliance documents early (e.g. CIPC, tax clearance, bank accounts) to qualify for support or tenders.
