As the festive season is in full swing, scammers are taking advantage of the holiday cheer to swindle unsuspecting victims. The South African Fraud Prevention Service has warned of a surge in scams targeting consumers during this time of year.
Pondoland Times readers are urged to be vigilant and aware of the top scams dominating the festive season in South Africa:
- Phishing Scams: Scammers are sending fake emails and SMSes claiming to be from reputable companies, such as banks and online retailers. These messages often contain links or attachments that, when clicked or opened, can install malware or steal personal information.
- Online Shopping Scams: With the rise of online shopping, scammers are creating fake websites and social media pages to sell non-existent or counterfeit goods. Be cautious when shopping online and only use reputable websites.
- Job Scams: Scammers are advertising fake job opportunities, often requiring applicants to pay a fee or provide personal information. Be wary of job offers that seem too good to be true or require upfront payments.
- Lottery and Prize Scams: Scammers are contacting people claiming they have won a prize or lottery, but require them to pay a fee or provide personal information to claim their winnings.
- Charity Scams: Scammers are posing as representatives of charitable organizations, soliciting donations from unsuspecting donors. Be cautious when donating to charities and only use reputable organizations.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, the South African Fraud Prevention Service advises consumers to:

- Never provide personal information or payment details to unknown individuals or organizations
- Use reputable online shopping websites and payment platforms
- Report suspicious activity to the authorities immediately
