The Eastern Cape Premier today joined residents in commemorating the 2025 International Day for Persons with Disabilities. The event mentioned the province’s progress, gaps, and urgent steps needed to ensure full inclusion. It also marked a renewed push for accountability across all government sectors.
What Happened
The Premier addressed hundreds of participants gathered to honour the annual global observance. She acknowledged improvements in awareness, inclusive education, assistive devices, and equity measures.
However, she stressed that many residents with disabilities still face barriers that block dignity, access, and opportunity.
“Our policies mean nothing if they do not change people’s lived experiences,” she said.
Official Response
In her address, the Premier announced a 5-year Provincial Action Plan designed to accelerate inclusion.
The plan commits government to:
- Better accessibility in public buildings
- Expanded rehabilitation and therapy services
- Accessible government communication
- Stronger partnerships that unlock economic opportunities
She emphasised that these steps go beyond compliance.
“This is a moral, ethical, and constitutional duty,” she said. “The Eastern Cape cannot move forward if persons with disabilities are left behind.”
Community Impact
The commitments aim to shift the province from policy statements to measurable action. Communities will see improvements in service access, support systems, and participation in economic life.
The Premier said the province must now deliver outcomes that are “lived, felt, and guaranteed” for all.
