The Comrades Marathon Association has announced major leadership changes following its Annual General Meeting in Pietermaritzburg. The AGM took place on Saturday at Carter High School.
Mark Leathers is the new Chairperson of the CMA Board. Nontuthuko Mashimane will serve as Vice Chairperson. Their appointments come as four additional Board members were elected to complete the team that will lead the association for the next 12 months.
Leathers brings strong experience and a deep commitment to the race. He ran the Comrades Marathon in 2024 and 2025, earning two Robert Mtshali medals. His finishing times were 9:25:18 and 9:17:18. He joined the Board during the 2024/2025 term and served as Vice Chairperson. He also chaired the Legal and Corporate Governance Sub-committee.
CMA Emphasises Stability and Expertise
The association says the new leadership team strengthens governance. Leathers’ legal background and direct experience as a runner form a strong combination. Mashimane steps into her role with a reputation for steady leadership and a clear understanding of the organisation’s long-term goals.
The CMA Board will now focus on planning for the upcoming race cycle. The team will continue improving governance structures, runner support, and event delivery. Officials say the new appointments bring stability and renewed energy.
The AGM also reviewed the association’s performance over the past year. Members discussed governance, event logistics, compliance, and community engagement. They also highlighted the importance of maintaining transparency as the Comrades Marathon continues to expand its global reach.
Looking Ahead to the Next 12 Months
The new Board will serve until the next AGM. The CMA says early planning for the next race is already under way. Leathers and Mashimane will oversee key decisions, including operational improvements and stakeholder engagement.
The association thanked outgoing Board members for their service. It also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a world-class ultra-marathon that honours its history and its runners.
The CMA says it is ready for a strong year ahead. The new leadership aims to balance tradition with modern governance and ensure the race continues to inspire athletes in South Africa and around the world.
