The Lusikisiki-based BOC Foundation is making waves by hosting mass weddings, a pioneering initiative that has drawn significant attention from the business sector, tourism, and the broader community. Their innovative approach has garnered media coverage and lifted the profile of the Eastern Cape (EC).
In an interview, Mrs. Wopula, a representative of the foundation, mentioned that they co-host these events with the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality. The support from traditional authorities, as they predominantly conduct traditional weddings, has been outstanding. Programs like Moja Love and SABC News have shown great interest and have already interviewed the foundation. The mass weddings aim to promote family orientation, family building, and family values.
The next mass wedding event is scheduled for September 22, 2024, at Magwa Tea Airstrip, where five couples will be wedded in special Amampondo attire. The couples are Noxolo and Bongani Mpezi, Coceka and Sandi Mabovu, Andiswa and Mmeli Sifumba, Bongiswa and Xola Mavuka, and Siyabonga and Noluthando Vevu.
The foundation also aims to combat gender-based violence (GBV), child abuse, and human trafficking. These events showcase traditional attire, heritage, and tourism, attracting widespread public interest. Last year, they hosted a thousand-seater venue that sold out, and this year’s event is targeting a maximum capacity of 6,000 due to high demand.
Celebrities have been drawn to these events, and they have even caught the attention of neighboring countries, highlighting the widespread appeal and impact of the BOC Foundation’s initiatives.
