The 2025 traditional male circumcision season has seen a disturbing spike in deaths and illegal activity, according to officials who briefed media on Monday.
What Happened
MEC Zolile Williams, along with Nkosi Buyanda Gwazinamba, confirmed that since the start of the season on 14 November 2025, the province has recorded:
- 20 deaths
- 421 illegal circumcisions
- 187 hospitalised initiates
- 3,827 treated on-site
- 51 criminal cases, with 41 arrests
The statistics were shared during a media update by the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee.
Official Response
Government has extended condolences to the affected families and warned of legal consequences for anyone involved in unsafe or unlawful circumcision practices.
“Those who break the law will be held accountable,” said MEC Williams.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting young lives during this culturally significant time.
Community Impact
Parents, communities, and traditional leaders have been urged to increase vigilance. The province continues to grapple with annual initiation season challenges, particularly in rural areas.
Local leaders are expected to work closely with law enforcement and health officials to prevent further harm.
