South African women on maternity leave can access financial support through the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). The Department of Employment and Labour has outlined key qualifying conditions and required documents for claiming maternity benefits — including support for miscarriage or stillbirth. Here’s what you need to know.
Who Qualifies for UIF Maternity Benefits?
To qualify for maternity benefits under the Unemployment Insurance Act:
- You must apply before or within 12 months after the birth of your child.
- You must be earning less than your normal salary while on maternity leave.
- You must have been employed for at least 13 weeks before applying.
- Benefits also apply in cases of miscarriage or stillbirth, up to a maximum of 121 days.
How Much You Can Receive
- Benefits are paid at a flat rate of 66% of your salary.
- Paid for a maximum of 121 days.
- The UIF covers the difference between your reduced salary and the prescribed benefit rate.
