Heavy rain and flooding can turn dangerous within hours — especially in rural areas with poor roads and drainage.

With severe weather expected across parts of the Eastern Cape, residents in villages and coastal communities are being urged to prepare now before conditions worsen.

Flooding in rural areas often cuts off roads, damages homes, and puts livestock at risk. Acting early can reduce the damage.

What you should do right now

Start by identifying flood-prone areas near your home. If you live close to a river, stream, or low-lying land, you are at higher risk.

Move important items — including documents, food supplies, and electrical appliances — to higher ground inside your house.

If you have livestock, relocate them to safer, elevated areas before the rain intensifies.

Charge your phone and keep emergency numbers saved. Power outages are possible during severe storms.

Avoid using roads that are known to flood. Even shallow water can sweep away vehicles or make roads impassable.

During heavy rain and flooding

Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or rivers. Many flood-related deaths happen this way.

Stay indoors where possible and avoid walking near fast-moving water.

Keep children away from rivers, streams, and drainage areas.

Monitor updates from the South African Weather Service and local authorities for warnings.

After the storm

Be cautious when returning to flooded areas. Roads and bridges may be damaged.

Avoid drinking water from unsafe sources unless it has been treated.

Check on neighbours, especially elderly residents, who may need assistance.

For Eastern Cape communities, especially in Pondoland, flooding often leads to isolation due to damaged gravel roads and limited emergency access. Early preparation can make a critical difference.
