Artists, creatives, and community arts groups now have a limited window to apply for new government funding — with applications officially open from 4 May and closing on 29 May 2026.
The Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP 7) is offering funding of up to R800,000 for projects that create jobs in the arts and cultural sector. The programme is part of government efforts to rebuild the creative economy after COVID-19.
This matters now because late or incomplete applications will not be accepted — and funding is competitive.
For creatives in the Eastern Cape, especially in rural areas like Bizana, Lusikisiki and Flagstaff, this is one of the few large-scale funding opportunities currently open. Local impact is significant if projects can bring jobs, training, and community arts development.
What you need to qualify
You can apply if you are:
- An individual artist (e.g. musician, writer, dancer)
- A registered arts organisation or community group
- A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
However, you cannot apply if you:
- Work for a government department or entity
- Submit more than one application
- Apply for more than the allowed funding limit
Even people in EPWP, internships, or learnerships are allowed to apply.
How much funding you can get
Funding depends on the size of your project:
- Up to R800,000 → must create at least 70 jobs
- Up to R500,000 → must create at least 40 jobs
- Up to R300,000 → smaller projects assessed on merit
What projects are funded
You can apply for projects such as:
- Music, theatre, dance or visual arts productions
- Community workshops and training
- Exhibitions, festivals, or performances
- Creative writing and publishing
- Cultural and indigenous art projects
But funding will NOT cover things like:
- Buying equipment or instruments
- Infrastructure or building costs
- Film and video production
- Competitions or awards
How to apply (step-by-step)
- Prepare your documents
You will need:
- Certified ID copy
- Bank statement (not older than 3 months)
- Full CV
- Portfolio of previous work
- Two reference letters
- Create your project plan
Make sure it clearly shows:
- Job creation numbers
- Community impact
- Budget and timeline
- Submit your application

- Or request a manual form via pesp@nac.org.za
- Call: 011 010 8850 / 011 010 8886
- Submit before the deadline
- Online: 29 May 2026 at 23:59
- Manual: 29 May 2026 at 17:00
Important: Late or incomplete applications are automatically disqualified.
What happens next
Successful applicants will be announced on 14 August 2026, and all approved projects must be completed by 31 March 2027.
Funding is not guaranteed — all applications are reviewed and approved at the discretion of the National Arts Council.
Why this matters locally
In many Eastern Cape communities, arts projects are one of the few ways young people can access income, skills, and opportunities.
If used properly, this funding can:
- Create jobs for local artists
- Support community events and cultural programmes
- Build long-term creative businesses
But missing the deadline or submitting weak applications means losing that opportunity.
If you are an artist or part of a creative group, this is a deadline worth acting on now.
