Pondoland Times newspaper in this month of appreciating and celebrating women’s significance has paid recognition to women from various villages surrounding the Phakade junction between Mount Ayliff and Kokstad. These women are selling grass for roofing, which has been years in this business.
The women in the pictures are Mangqoko Qasha, Nomawethu Gebe, Phumla Mbangi, Mamadiba Lwandle, and Mamu January. These women have been doing this business to support their families for years and we have been told that winter and spring are the good seasons for this business.
Mangqoko Qasha says the business is booming during this season and they get customers from different provinces who usually come with trucks.
As much as it is risky and dangerous for us women to go to the bushes alone, but we go anyway because it is how we make a living for our families. – said Qasha
