The small town of Flagstaff in the Alfred Nzo region has made great strides in recent years with multiple on going development projects that include a 19 088 square meter shopping center that’s currently in final stages of construction. The monumental shopping complex, by the town’s standards, has been one of the catalysts in driving much needed employment in the rural town that is ravaged by unemployment due to lack of development.
The construction of the state of the art shopping centre began in 2020 and it is set to open on 28 October 2021. The centre is a joint venture between EyamaMpondo Properties and McCormick Property Development (MPD), with the latter being the developer on the project.
Flagstaff Square will be MPD’s 69th rural retail development with Mike Buyskes being the main contractor on site. The construction phase of the project already employs 120 locals which equates to more than 60% of the total workforce. “We anticipate an additional 500 jobs will be created post construction.” Said Ruan from MPD
EXPECTED TENANTS
Once finished, the complex will be home to some of the most recognizable and loved brands in Mzansi. The tenant list includes but not limited to, Roots Butchery, Clicks, Capitec, Shoprite Liquor, Truworths, Studio 88, Markham, Exact, Jet, Ackermans, Pep, Skipper Bar, Sneaker Factory, Street Fever, a Food court, and ATM’s. This will surely offer much needed convenience and help to de-crowd the main street in the CBD area where much of the town’s shopping takes place.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR LOCAL YOUTH
The construction phase of the project has offered learnership opportunities to 5 full time students as part of the agreement with the Ingquza Hill Municipality. The students are currently getting first hand experience and practical skills in building and construction processes. The agreement between MPD (property developer on the project) and Ingquza Local Municipality includes the utilization of local businesses in the construction phase of the project with most of the machinery used including Tipper Trucks, Excavators and TLBs owned and operated by locals.
Some of the walls in the mall will be covered with artwork designed and painted by a local artist from Flagstaff.
