Enyobeni Tavern

Today, 06 July 2022, a mass funeral of nineteen out of the twenty-one victims that tragically lost their lives at the Enyobeni Tavern in East London was held at the Scenery Park Sports Field. This gathering was also reported live from other platforms for the nation to engage and watch.

Community members, peers and church leaders came in numbers to grieve the lives of the young dreamers that were unfortunately victims at Enyobeni Tavern on 26th June 2022. ANC members of parliament as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the funeral.

District Health SM from the Eastern Cape Department of Health Dr. L Matiwane disclosed with the masses that the victims did not die due to stampede.

“The forensic team are satisfied that the death as a result of a supposed stampede can be ruled out” he said.

Dr. Matiwane also stated that more tests are being examined at the Cape Town Laboratory and are still waiting for results to what caused the death of these young lives.

“It takes a village to raise a child and in this case the tavern owner of Enyobeni failed to raise that village” says Mr. Lucky Ntimane from the National Liquor Trader Association.

Minister of Police, Bheki Cele took it upon himself to mention that the youth of Scenery Park lack resources to distract themselves on a daily basis. He states that the youth does not have alternatives hence they wake up and end up in shebeens and taverns. He urged that the government do their park in this community to avoid such tragic events from taking place.
