A Facebook post by a UNISA student, Lehasa Silas, asked if applying for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant would terminate their NSFAS funding. The post quickly went viral with over 65 comments, revealing a wave of confusion among students receiving financial support.

Some commenters claimed they successfully receive both NSFAS and SRD payouts.

“Tyr [sic] ur luck I’m getting both as we speak,” wrote Nosipho Ka Luvuyo Buthelezi.
“Approved for April, payday tomorrow. Received last month’s book and living allowance.”

However, others said their SRD applications were consistently declined because they were listed as NSFAS beneficiaries.

“Every time when you check your status you’ll get declined. Reason: NSFAS registered,” one student replied.

Official Response

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has previously clarified that students funded by NSFAS do not qualify for the SRD grant. According to their eligibility criteria, applicants must not receive any other form of government support.

This means many students may automatically be flagged and declined, even if they try to apply.
