Students with outstanding NSFAS appeals 2026 documents have until 31 March 2026 to complete their submissions.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) confirmed the deadline during a media briefing in Pretoria while providing an update on funding for the 2026 academic year.

Officials warned that delays in submitting supporting documents may affect funding decisions and payment timelines for students whose appeals are still under review.

What is happening?

NSFAS has urged students who submitted funding appeals but still have missing documentation to upload the required documents before the 31 March 2026 deadline.

According to NSFAS Acting CEO Waseem Carrim, the scheme has already processed more than 101 000 appeals submitted for the 2026 academic year.

However, thousands of appeals remain incomplete because students have not yet submitted the required supporting evidence.

Students who fail to submit the documents in time may experience delays in funding decisions or payments.

Key details from the NSFAS appeal update

NSFAS provided the following breakdown of appeal outcomes so far:

Appeal status Number of appeals
Approved 22 654
Awaiting supporting documents 9 073
Rejected 18 108
Closed, deleted or withdrawn 44 411
Total processed 101 201

Students may submit appeals if they do not meet academic progression or financial eligibility criteria.

Appeals are usually considered under circumstances such as:

  • Medical conditions affecting studies
  • Traumatic personal events
  • Evidence showing the student can complete their qualification

NSFAS said the appeals system is designed to remain fair and accessible while ensuring funding reaches eligible students.

Why it matters to students

Submitting outstanding documents quickly is important because NSFAS cannot finalise an appeal without supporting evidence.

If documents remain missing:

  • The appeal may remain unresolved
  • Funding approval may be delayed
  • Allowance payments may be affected

For many students, NSFAS funding covers tuition, accommodation, transport and daily allowances.

Delays could therefore affect students’ ability to continue studying or secure accommodation.

Accommodation applications update

NSFAS also reported progress on student housing arrangements for the academic year.

So far the scheme has received 224 983 accommodation applications nationwide.

Out of these:

Accommodation process Number
Applications received 224 983
Signed lease agreements submitted 148 825

Students and accommodation providers still need to submit many outstanding lease agreements.

NSFAS warned that incomplete documentation could delay accommodation allowance payments.

Funding already paid to students

NSFAS has already released several large payments to support students during the current academic year.

Recent disbursements include:

  • R3.55 billion paid on 2 February 2026 for allowances and accommodation
  • R2.82 billion paid on 2 March 2026 for ongoing student support
  • R679 million released to TVET colleges for tuition funding
  • Additional payments made to thousands of students in February for transport and accommodation allowances

These payments are intended to help students begin the academic year without financial barriers.
