In an effort to lessen the existing hurdles faced by the department, the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDOE) under the leadership of re-appointed MEC Fundile Gade, intends to rationalise, merge, or close approximately 1000 “unviable” schools across the province due to low enrolment.

This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the National Department of Basic Education will primarily focus on rural areas where low enrolment in both primary and high schools is more prevalent.
According to Eastern Cape (EC) education spokesperson, Vuyiseka Mboxela, many schools in the Eastern Cape’s rural areas have enrolments as low as thirty-five pupils, which creates financial strains for the department.
Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Mboxela stated that the department has already taken primary steps of this initiative, which is to identify “unviable” schools across all twelve districts in the Eastern Cape.
