On Wednesday, this week, the Department of Correctional Services in Kokstad Medium Correctional Centre hosted FundaMzantsi competition.
Offenders from all Centres under Kokstad Management Area that straddles as from Matatiele, Kokstad Medium, Umzimkhulu and as far as Port Shepstone Correctional Centre compitated against each other with the aim of selecting the cream of crop that will represent this Management Area in Provincial championships in Durban Westiville Correctional Centre later this month.
FundaMzantsi is the brainchild of Library South Africa in partnership with Department of Correctional Services to promote the culture of reading in our socities and Correctional Centres.
Ebongweni Closed Maximum Correctional Educator Siphephelo Ntanzi said FundaMzantsi is here to promote and preserve indigenous languages. “Be proud of your language market it through writing, reading and speaking it. This is an opportunity that you have to grab with both two hands (offenders) we have (02) ex offenders from this Centre who have been discovered through this initiative, by now that are published authors” said Ntanzi. He concluded by motivating them that they can make a leaving through reading, writing and publishing upon their release in Correctional Centres.
These programmes really play pivotal in rehabilitation of offenders. We have good stories to tell we consider them as reading for redemption.
