The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has placed journalist Natasha Phiri on precautionary suspension following allegations she received R500 for information, the broadcaster confirmed on Monday, 23 March 2026.
The decision comes after evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Johannesburg.
What happened
According to evidence presented at the commission, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi allegedly paid Phiri R500 for contact details linked to blogger Musa Khawula.
Nkosi initially denied making the payment but later acknowledged it during testimony.
The matter forms part of a broader investigation into the planned arrest of Khawula and alleged links to businessman Ze Nxumalo.
Official response
In an official statement, the SABC said it had noted the evidence presented at the commission and was treating the matter seriously.
The broadcaster confirmed Phiri’s precautionary suspension while investigations continue.
The SABC added that it expects all staff to uphold values of trust, integrity and professional conduct.
Impact
The case raises concerns about journalistic ethics and possible misconduct within law enforcement.
The commission is also examining potential links between Nxumalo and senior police officials, including allegations of interference in policing decisions.
