In a statement released today, PA Leader Gayton McKenzie confirmed the decision, citing an ongoing internal review. The party took swift action following reports that Kunene was seen at the residence of Katiso Molefe, a suspect arrested in connection with the murder of musician DJ Sumbody. Kunene has defended his presence, claiming he was “in the wrong place at the wrong time” while conducting a media interview.

Kunene, who also serves as Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, stated he arrived at the location on a media-related visit. Speaking to SABC News, he emphasized his intentions were professional:

“It was a question of perhaps being at the wrong place at the wrong time for the right reasons.” (Jacaranda FM)

Despite his explanation, PA chief McKenzie held that the allegations and public outcry warranted prompt and decisive action.

What’s Happening Now

  • PA’s internal investigation is underway to assess Kunene’s conduct and determine whether further disciplinary measures are required.
  • Kunene remains on leave until the outcome of the investigation is confirmed.
  • The incident has attracted national attention, raising questions about political figures and accountability amid high-profile criminal cases.

Why It Matters

As a high-ranking official in both the Patriotic Alliance and the Johannesburg municipal government, Kunene’s suspension puts the spotlight on:

  • Politicians’ associations with controversial figures
  • The need for transparency and accountability among public officials
  • Public trust, especially in areas of law enforcement and governance

We will continue to monitor developments and report on findings from the Patriotic Alliance investigation. Stay tuned for updates.
