In a powerful step toward justice and safety for women, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal has successfully brought a serial rapist to justice after years of terror in the communities of KwaMbonambi and Empangeni. Between July 2010 and April 2021, thirteen women including a 15-year-old girl  were attacked in similar, brutal ways. The victims, many of whom were on their way to or from school, were ambushed, dragged into bushes or sugarcane fields, and raped at knifepoint. The trauma extended to one horrifying incident where an elderly woman was robbed in her home while two young women were raped in front of her.

Recognising a pattern, the case was handed over to SAPS’s Serial and Electronic Crimes Investigation (SECI) unit. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Maxwel Nsele, the dedicated team reopened old dockets and meticulously pieced together more than a decade’s worth of evidence. Their relentless efforts led to a breakthrough: 42-year-old Bhekithemba Fanozi Nxumalo was identified and linked through forensic evidence to all thirteen cases.

On 10 June 2024, Nxumalo was sentenced to 12 life terms for rape, along with an additional 75 years for robbery. His conviction marks a significant victory not just for the victims, but for all women in the region.

Since April 2024, the SECI unit has secured 18 life sentences and 425 years behind bars for crimes including serial rape, child pornography, kidnapping, and violent assault.

This success underscores SAPS’s ongoing commitment to tackling gender-based violence and ensuring safer communities for all especially during Women’s Month, a time to reflect on justice, protection, and change.
