An extensive operation in the Eastern Cape has led to the arrest of six suspects and the confiscation of livestock valued at over R6 million amid ongoing concerns over stock theft.

A specialized task team, formed from various divisions including the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, K-9, Airwing, and the Department of Health, conducted a two-week operation from September 23 to October 4, 2024. Targeting high-risk districts namely Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo, Chris Hani, and Amathole. The operation effectively disrupted entrenched livestock theft networks.

During the operation, a staggering 342 cattle, 408 sheep, 28 goats, and a horse were seized, leading to a total estimated value of R6,127,500. Notably, the team issued 83 fines worth R97,600 and served non-compliance notices to four butcheries in KwaBhaca.

Some key arrests included Asakhe Tshekula, 20, who was sentenced to 180 days in prison after pleading guilty to possessing eight stolen cattle and a horse. Simphiwe Mbombo, 55, faced a fine for possessing cow carcasses, while a 26-year-old man was nabbed for harboring six sheep identified as stolen.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene highlighted the challenge of stock theft, urging farmers to secure their livestock through branding or tattooing to aid in legal prosecutions. “We appeal to stock owners to work with the police so that we can overcome these challenges,” she stated.
