What Happened

On 12 January 2024, around 11:45, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from Bethelsdorp Visible Policing responded to reports of gunshots in Kleinskool, Bethelsdorp. Officers discovered two victims on Main Road and a third inside a residence on Nevada Street, all with fatal gunshot wounds.

The accused opened fire on SAPS members during his attempted apprehension but was arrested within approximately 10 minutes. Police recovered three 9mm firearms at the scene.

While no eyewitnesses testified to the murders, forensic and circumstantial evidence including DNA on a firearm, primer residue on Sombulashe’s hands, and a stolen cellphone, linked him to the crimes.

This sentence proves the NPA’s commitment to holding violent offenders accountable. Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Barry Madolo said the ruling reflects the gravity of the offences and serves as a deterrent to those committing violent crime.

“The sentence serves as justice for the victims and their families, and as a deterrent to those who resort to violence. The NPA will continue to work closely with law enforcement to safeguard communities and uphold the rule of law,” Madolo added.
