In an effort to ensure the security and safety of inmates and staff during the festive season, the Department of Correctional Services, in collaboration with the South African Police Services, conducted a comprehensive operation cleanup at Kokstad Medium Correctional Centre. The operation aimed at intensively searching offenders, their belongings, and their living quarters to prevent any security threats among inmates and between inmates and officials.
Led by Acting Area Commissioner Siphokazi Mazwi, the high-level operation resulted in the confiscation of two cell phones, chargers, and approximately 2 kilograms of cannabis from offenders. Expressing gratitude for the concerted effort of both departments, Commissioner Mazwi emphasized the ongoing commitment to conducting regular searches to prevent escapes and the possession of unauthorized items.
Despite challenges like the influx of contraband, including knives, cannabis, and cell phones thrown over the fence from the community, the Correctional Services issued an appeal to the public to refrain from compromising security. The department also urged families to avoid visiting loved ones under the influence of alcohol, emphasizing the importance of maintaining respect and not engaging in activities that could compromise security within the correctional facilities. Violators will face disciplinary measures as authorities remain vigilant in upholding safety and security standards.
