A new Veterinary Council will take office on 1 February 2026, following formal appointments by Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen.
The council’s three-year term will run until 31 January 2029 under the Veterinary and Para-Veterinary Professions Act.
Steenhuisen says the council brings together diverse skills to protect public health, food safety, and professional standards.
What is happening?
Minister John Steenhuisen has finalised the appointment of the new South African Veterinary Council, the statutory body responsible for regulating the veterinary and para-veterinary professions. The new council begins its term on 1 February 2026, with a mandate running until 31 January 2029.
The constitution of the council follows months of consultation and nominations, with stakeholders across the veterinary sector making representations. However, the minister emphasised that all final decisions were made independently and in strict accordance with the law.
Why it matters to you
The SAVC plays a critical role in regulating professional standards in animal health, veterinary public health, and food safety. A properly constituted, credible, and independent council ensures that veterinary practitioners are held to account and that public trust in the profession is upheld.
Minister Steenhuisen said the newly appointed council is “fit for purpose” and will be able to execute its duties “without fear or favour,” bringing long-needed stability and oversight back to the sector.
